FORTYYEARNO
The year everything caught up, and I said no in every direction.
There was no rest for the innocent, only for the wicked.
I could not speak.
Not when my spouse asked for a divorce and left. Not when my health insurance was cancelled the next business day. Not for eight weeks.
Forty Year No is what I wrote down instead.
MX. LOVE C. DIALOGOS
I would turn forty in Seoul, after a vocal surgery that required eight weeks of voice rest. Doctor's orders.
I could not speak. My spouse gave me fifteen minutes of yelling and talking at me whilst I watched a twenty-three year relationship fall through my hands like trying to hold water. I couldn't cry. I couldn't discuss.
Thirty-six hours later I couldn't refill my prescription while in surgical recovery.
I filed the divorce four days later, voiceless, by email, and kept running a thirteen-state practice while it happened. Two physicians certified I had been working eighty to a hundred hours a week and ordered me down to forty.
And for the first time, in every direction at once, I said no — and I wrote all of it down.
Forty Year No is about what a system does with someone it was not built for, and about the distance between being documented and being believed.
Every source in this book is a public filing, a medical record, or a message with a timestamp on it. The citations are in the back.
